THE GREAT MIDWEEK: For the first time ever, The Great Midweek Registration will take place at Emseni Camp on Monday 7 October 2019

I normally ride the Descent/The Great Midweek/2 day, but would like to do one of the other events this year. Am I allowed?

You may enter the event of your choice.

What is the difference between The Great Midweek and the Descent?

The Descent is our flagship event, with prize money allocated to the winners in the Race up Spionkop. The Great Midweek is more of an Adventure and has a shorter day 1 route. The field is much smaller, which in general leads to a much more relaxed vibe.

Is there a shuttle service to get my car from the start of the Descent to Emseni?

There will be a car shuttle from the start at The Border Post, to the finish at Emseni. This is a Winterton and Bergville church fundraiser. Bookings will open soon. The Great Midweek and 2 Day events start and finish in the same Race Village.

Can I enter the Berg and Bush with my child?

According to Cycling South Africa our 2 day event classifies as a mini stage race. This means that children turning 15 before 31st December can enter. This creates a great opportunity for you to compete with your son or daughter in the fun Parent/Teenager categories. (Mother teen and Father teen)

Is dinner available on the night of registration?

Yes, it is included in the entry fee. As well as a hot breakfast at the start for all 3 Events.

What time is race briefing?

Race briefing starts at 18h00 unless communicated otherwise.

For the Descent & The Great Midweek you do as we have introduced GPS mapping in 2016. The 2 Day is a great event to try and use it but its not compulsory as we have marked it.

What should I always have with me whilst on the route?

It’s always a good idea to have your medical aid card with you. Although signal is not always available, it is wise to take your phone with you.

Do I need to bring a lock for my tent?

Theft is not really a problem, but if it makes you feel more relaxed, then you are welcome to do so.

Art and elegance meet at Berg & Bush

Riders at the 2019 Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush can look forward to another eye-popping rider jersey, courtesy of Ardmore and Enjoy.

One of the more recent innovations at the Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush has been the inspired addition of the Ardmore designed rider jersey.

This year’s rider jersey is made locally by the innovative and proudly South African company Enjoy. The product is an unconventional new style, designed more for the free-rider who enjoys some room to manoeuvre on the trails.

Ardmore, which has it’s roots in the same region as Berg & Bush, is renowned the world over for its inspired designs, stunning collections and partnerships with brands like Hermes. The families responsible for Ardmore and Berg & Bush also share a strong connection, making the partnership much more than a business transaction.

Since 2017, the Berg & Bush rider jersey has been the standout amongst South African cycling-event rider jerseys. Inspired by local flora, fauna and the unique landscape of the central Drakensberg, the recent Berg & Bush rider jerseys have become as much of a talking point as the Berg & Bush trails themselves.

Last year, the jersey design took inspiration from Ardmore’s Qalakabusha range, depicting cheerful monkeys, cunning crocodiles, regal leopards, joyful zebras and singing birds amid protea and other floral designs.

For 2019, riders can look forward to another conversation-starting design. “In the last few years, we have grown into the cycling world and reached out to a new audience,” says Ardmore’s Catherine Berning.

To keep the look fresh and fabulous for that new audience, Berning and Ardmore have delved deep into their creative vault. “We wanted to do something bold this year,” says Berning, “so we have featured our beautiful “Hippo Flower” and "Bird Crossing" design on the jersey with highlights of “Leopard Lights” on the sleeve and collar. We have a wide variety of Ardmore designs and we bring out new collections every two years.”

For race organiser Gary Green, having Ardmore involved adds an extra touch of elegance to the Berg & Bush events.

“Thanks to my wife Nicky, daughters Roxanne and Spoen, and Jani Maritz, I think our race village has become one of the most festive and best looking around - there are subtle touches of their combined brilliance everywhere.

Having Ardmore on board as our rider jersey designer adds to the elegance, class and quality that the Berg & Bush ladies already bring to the event. On top of that, it’s actually just great fun getting so many comments from other riders when they see a Berg & Bush jersey for the first time; it really makes you stand out!”

From a technical standpoint, Enjoy’s jersey was inspired by the Berg & Bush ethos. “For the average bike rider podiums are not why we invest in a bike,” says Enjoy’s Richard Cornish. “The reality is we do it because we enjoy the freedom and the adventure. Slacker geometry, technical trails and carefree riding are gathering more and more momentum so this year Gary and Roxanne were after a garment that captured this ethos.”

Aligned with this philosophy is Enjoy’s latest 2019 Trail-Tee. Forget race cuts and pockets to store all of your household belongings - this year’s garment is about maximum comfort.

“The slim fitting Trail-Tee is made from a 125gsm Flux™mesh and Flow polytrail which are both highly breathable, great for keeping you cool when temperature goes up. There are a few pockets for the essentials but this top is all about the harnessing the carefree feeling of riding your bike. By all means put your favourite bib on, but please don’t forget the trail shorts to complete the look!”

New Berg & Bush jersey adds artistry to altitude

For the second year running, Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush entrants will be treated to a unique rider jersey designed by the renowned artists...

For the second year running, Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush entrants will be treated to a unique rider jersey designed by the renowned artists of Ardmore Ceramic Art.

Featuring cheeky monkeys and vivid florals, the Berg & Bush rider jersey will once again stand apart on the stage race circuit.

“The Berg & Bush prides itself on being innovative,” says event organiser Gary Green. “And by partnering with the iconic Ardmore Ceramic Art team who works of art can be found all over the world, we’ve created another special rider jersey that will really stick-out on the trails. Last year the jerseys were a massive hit, and I see it being no different this year.”

The jerseys have been manufactured by Enjoy, with the designs taking inspiration from Ardmore’s Qalakabusha range.

"Qalakabusha" the Zulu word for "new beginnings" is the name given to Ardmore Design’s first fabric collection. The range depicts cheerful monkeys, cunning crocodiles, regal leopards, joyful zebras and singing birds amid protea and other floral designs. The colours are bright and and designs bold.

The Ardmore family are thrilled to see their ‘Monkey Palm' design on this year’s ‘Berg and Bush’ cycle jerseys. Last year we used our 'Protea Fields’ design and it is exciting to see our collaboration with Berg and Bush continue to flourish. The vervet monkey is a great favourite and friend of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Amasumpa sun-burst design is symbolic in Zulu tradition for creativity and life. These motifs seemed fitting for a race that entails vigor and vitality.

From a technical side, the jersey is from Enjoy’s best selling Supremium range. “This year we have overhauled our Supremium cycle top and it now features a low-cut neck, lengthened sleeves and a fourth security pocket for keeping phones and valuables safe,” says Enjoy’s Richard Cornish.

“These changes, along with the vibrant design, should make for a great riding product, with Berg & Bush riders among the first in South Africa to get their hands on the new Superpremium cut, as it is only scheduled for a Spring release. We feel it’s definitely something to look forward to.”
