2 DAY ROUTE

Day 1 – 65km

Leaving Emseni Camp we enter Spionkop Game Reserve with much anticipation. After passing large herds of startled game we leave Spionkop dam behind us to arrive at the Braithwaite’s farm for the infamous Boat Crossing. Here enthusiastic, local farmers race us across the 2km stretch of water to deliver us to the base of Spionkop Mountain. A 400m ascent awaits us as we climb to the summit of this historic mountain, the scene of a bloody battle during the Anglo Boer War. Cattle and game have flattened our 15km route down the mountain to the start of the  5km Garden of Eden track along the river to our overnight stay at Emseni Camp.

Day 2 – 50km

Our route starts by crossing the Tugela below Spionkop dam wall and into Woodlands farm where beautiful Acacia thorn trees provide the scenery backdrop for the day. We cross the Tugela oxbow several times today, our second crossing being next at Panaar farm which takes us on to Earl’s lovely riverside bushcamp. After following many kilometers of singe track along the banks of the Tugela river we cross again at Schietsdrift , used by the Ven Commando on their way to fight at Blood river in 1837. A hefty climb up Kim’s Kak-off and Mike’s pass is rewarded with the relief of sweeping single track down Wesley’s Way and the last watering table. Nicky’s nightmare and Little Red are the only small set-to’s on our final descent back down through Woodlands Farm with its rolling tracks through the trees and stone quarry on our way home.
